A former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday explained to the Senate why he spent N2.5 billion constructing a new Government House while he was in power.
Fayemi was one of the 10 ministerial nominees screened by the Senate on Tuesday.
Sequel to a question by Senator Olusola Adeyeye (APC-Osun Central) on why he had to spend so much money building a new Government House, Fayemi said contrary to reports of spending over N30 billion on the building, he spent N2.5 billion.
He said he was moved into building the Government House because after 19 years, the state did not have one.
He equally said after seeing the magnificent Government House in Akwa Ibom State during a visit to former Governor Godswill Akpabio, he was inspired to build the edifice.
Fayemi, however, said he did not spend as much as critics of the project have been quoting.
He equally said there was no bed in the Government House worth N50 million as alleged.
He said the most expensive of the beds in the Government House was N1.5 million.
Fayemi told the Senate that the time had come to reposition the education sector of the country.
