The Financial Secretary of Niche (Ikeja) Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Muyiwa Bello, wants Nigerians to eat more of vegetables as against the usual traditional foods.
Bello said there are more nutritional values inherent in vegetable than other foods.
Bello stated this during the official launch of Niche (Ikeja) Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited in Ikeja, Lagos.
Bello, a Chartered Accountant, said vegetables have a lot of nutritional value than other foods and it is necessary for a healthy and a long life.
He also explained that although there are many cooperative societies, Niche, like the name, has carved a niche for itself and as such it has the cutting edge over others.
Bello said: “At Niche (Ikeja) Cooperative Multipurpose Society, there is a possibility of growing as big as possible, which is what has informed some of the things we (executives) are doing in the cooperative.
“We are laying the foundation to make it as big as possible.
“So, our cutting edge is that we are laying a plan on technology so as to be able to manage our membership base.
“Also, travelling or taking vacation is possible with the cooperative and it should not be seen as an elitist affair.
“The cooperative will also be a venture to help people achieve their dreams.”
Bello also disclosed that there are more cooperative societies in Asian countries than in Africa and that is why they enjoy a robust economy than others, emphasizing that cooperatives can actually be one of the panaceas to economic recession since they serve as “business angels” that help in starting up the businesses of their members.
In his remark, the President of Niche (Ikeja) Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Frank Daniels, enjoined Nigerians to cultivate the habit of saving and tap in the numerous benefits of belonging to a cooperative society as it helps to fast track development.
Daniels also said that the present economic situation in the country is a better reason why one should endeavor to be a member of a cooperative society because aside from getting loans easily as a member, one is also exposed to lots of ideas.
Also, a representative of the Directorate of Cooperative, Ministry of Commerce, Lagos State, Uche Obi, stated that it is the duty of the Ministry to supervise the financial books of the cooperative.
Obi enjoined all to participate without fear, stressing that Niche is being managed by seasoned professionals.
The Eagle Online reports that the first cooperative society was formed in 1844 by 28 artisans in Rochdale, England.
