Benin Republic dimmed the chances of the Super Eagles qualifying for the 2026 World Cup finals with a 2-1 defeat on Monday.
Ironically, it was the first match in the qualifying series in which the Super Eagles would be the first to score.

In all the qualifying matches since the race began in November 2023, the match against Benin Republic in Cote d’Ivoire was the first in which the Super Eagles would take the lead.
This came courtesy of Raphael Onyeadika in the 31st minute.
However, before the end of the first half, the Benin Republic team scored twice to make it 2-1.
Their goals came through Joel Dossou and Steve Mounic in the 37th minute and the third minute of added time in the first half.
The second half was without any goal.
