Several videos and photographs have emerged on the show of shame that took place in Nigeria’s Senate on Wednesday.
The drama, which started with a protest by a group under the aegis of Angry Nigerians, eventually led to the removal of the mace from the Red Chamber while plenary, presided over by the Deputy President of the Senate, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, was on.
The representative of Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, was arrested by the FCT Police Command, led by the Commissioner, Sadiq Bello, over the incident.
Omo-Agege, who was suspended last week Thursday, was accused by the Senate of having led the invasion of the Senate.
The accusation was contained in a statement by the Senate’s spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.
The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, speaking from Washington DC in the United States of America, where he is attending the IMF/World Bank Spring Meeting, condemned the invasion.
Saraki also hailed the House of Representatives for backing the Senate to defend democracy.
Ekweremadu later met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, saying President Muhammadu Buhari, who is away in the UK attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, would not have supported such act.
The All Progressives Congress also condemned the invasion of the Senate.
