Videos, channels that defined Nigerian moments on YouTube in 2016

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Anglophone West Africa, has described the videos and channels that defined Nigerian moments on YouTube this year as a great “discovery”.
Kola-Ogunlade in a statement in Lagos on Thursday said that local videos took precedence this year over other types.
He said that if there were a word to describe the year 2016, it should be ‘discovery’.
Said: “From the videos that captured people’s attentions and emotions, to the music that kept us glued to the dance floors, 2016 truly stands out as a year of pleasant surprises for Nigerians.”
The Google manager lauded Nigerians who joined the global community in “working” the dance floors with Rihanna.
He said it was quite enthralling as local videos by rising child star, Emmanuella, AY and Jenifa took precedence.
He said that other local news moments like Tiwa Savage’s explosive interview, which was the second most watched video, also got people watching, “wow-ing” and sharing on YouTube.
Kola-Ogunlade added: “If anything at all, this year’s non-music list makes it even more apparent that Nigerians love a good laugh, with eight of the top 10 trending videos being humour-themed.
“The much talked-about Mark Angel Comedy was the most featured with three of the top 10 videos in the non-music category.
“The all-time Nigerian favourite AYTV owned by popular comedian, Ayo Makun, continues to excite some of the top trending contents on YouTube in Nigeria.
“While the global chart hit ‘Work’ by the sultry Barbadian singer/songwriter, Rihanna, featuring Drake in the music category occupies the top position with over 796 million views.
“Local music videos reign supreme, occupying nine of the top 10 trending music videos in 2016 featuring young acts like Kiss Daniel, Korede Bello and Tekno Miles earning higher views.”
Kola-Ogunlade listed the 2016 Top 10 trending videos (Nigeria) as: I’ll Beat You (Mark Angel Comedy), Tiwa Savage’s Addresses Tee Billz’s Accusations in Exclusive Video, Emanuella Sleep (Mark Angel Comedy).
Others include: After School Lesson (Mark Angel Comedy), AY Live Acapella, MC King Kong Dancing Sekemba by VjOj and Awilo Longomba, Jenifa’s Diary – Season 6 Trailer.
Also listed are President Buhari Runs to Synagogue Prophet T.B Joshua for healing deliverance and Funke Akindele’s Rocks New Boo At beach party in Jenifa’s Diary Season Five Episode one.
It also included: “Iya Ibadan” – Yoruba Latest 2016 [premium] and Comedy Movie by Toyin Aimakhu and Helen Paul.
Kola-Ogunlade said that the Top 10 Trending music videos (Nigeria) are: Rihanna – Work (Explicit) ft. Drake, Kiss Daniel Mama [Official Video], Korede Bello – Mungo Park Official Music Video.
Others are: Phyno -“Fada Fada” (Official Video) ft. Olamide, “Falz – Soldier” (Full Length Movie) ft. SIMI, “PSquare” – Bank Alert [Official Video], Humblesmith ft. Davido (Official Video) – OSINACHI (Remix).
