USAID to support Delta on agriculture

The US Agency for International Development is to assist Delta State to develop agriculture food chains and aqua culture in the state.
The Secretary to the State Government, Ovouzuorie Macaulay, made the announcement on Monday in Asaba, the state capital, while giving the mid-term report of his office.
Macaulay said that USAID would also assist the state to stimulate small and medium-scale enterprises.
He said said that his office had also solicited the collaboration of USAID in the fight against proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition, expressing hope that the efforts would pay off in the current campaign for a “Delta State Beyond Oil”.
The Secretary said the state government alone could not handle the challenges of unemployment, adding that unemployment was not peculiar to Delta State but a global issue.
Macaulay said that to address unemployment challenges among youths, stakeholders must join hands to create job opportunities.
He said: “We must all begin to take it as a challenge upon ourselves to create programmes and projects that can take a lot of youths out of the streets.”
Macaulay said that the state had concluded plans to privatise its refuse management, noting that it would help to address the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the state.
