The Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has advocated for partnership between Pink Pearl Foundation and the State Micro-credit Scheme in the empowerment of women and the less privileged in the state.
Dr. Uduaghan, who made the call on Thursday during the flag-off of the First Pink Pearl Exhibition by graduates of the Rubies School of Women Empowerment, an arm of the Pink Pearl Foundation programme in Asaba, said the partnership would help empower the graduates to improve their living standards and create employment for the less privileged women in the society.
He explained that the State Micro-Credit Scheme would help provide funds for the graduates of the foundation to enable them start up their own businesses.
“I call for partnership between Pink Pearl Foundation Empowerment Programme and the State Micro-Credit Scheme. This will enable the women trained by the foundation in different skills to be empowered and start up a trade,” he said.
Uduaghan, who commended the Chief Executive Officer of Pink Pearl Foundation, Orode Ryan-Okpu, for the achievements and the diversification into women empowerment programme, charged her to sustain the initiative for the good of Deltans and Nigerians in general.
In a welcome address, Ryan-Okpu explained that 103 women from Delta State were trained in different skills in the four months empowerment programme.
She said: “We have trained 103 women in this foundation, who are exhibiting their skills today.
“They have been trained in the past four months in different skills.
“None of the women had an idea of any of the skills they learnt.
“They had to learn it from scratch and we thank God they have graduated today.”
Ryan-Okpu, who explained that the graduates have produced the different items, which they supply and sell to retail shops at moderate prices, observed that the foundation had different departments, which include the Wire Works/Accessories Department that produces jewelries, beads, and hats; the Industrial Department produced 21 items such as shampoos, beauty and scrubbing powder, liquid soaps, among others; and the Tailoring Department customized different fabrics and materials.
