Tyson Fury has back-pedalled on his retirement plans by claiming that he will fight until he is 40 years old – which is nine years away.
The Gypsy King had stated that he would listen to his family’s pleas and hang up his gloves after three more fights since stunning Deontay Wilder to win the WBC Heavyweight Championship in February.
However, Fury – who is in talks over a unification superfight with heavyweight rival Anthony Joshua – has had a change of heart and now plans on fighting for almost another decade.
“I’m going to fight on until I’m 40 years old,” Fury told ESPN. “I’ve been thinking about it, and there isn’t much else to do anyways.
“So yeah, I may as well keep fighting. I don’t see anyone out there that can challenge me anyway.
“I just flattened the best one out there, the toughest opponent out there is Deontay Wilder, and we all saw what happened to him the last time out.”
Fury is set to face Wilder for the third time after the American activated a rematch clause, but the fight has been thrown into uncertainty by the coronavirus outbreak.
The trilogy bout had been set for the summer but has been pushed back twice and is now scheduled for November.
Fury’s promoter Frank Warren admitted that the venue could change to allow the fight to take place sooner, though the main focus appears to be on agreeing terms for the unification bout with Joshua.
ESPN have confirmed that Saudi Arabia has tabled a £400m offer to host the superfight between the British duo in December.
Fury’s wife Paris said in March that she would like Tyson to retire after fighting AJ.
“I’d like him to beat Anthony Joshua and then stop,” she said.
“He’s in the ring with supreme boxers and it is a dangerous sport. We both know the risks.”
