TUC congratulates NLC on successful election

The Trade Union Congress has congratulated its sister labour union, the Nigeria Labour Congress, on the successful conduct of its election.
The NLC election took place on Friday night in Abuja.
It was the highpoint of the 11th Triennial Delegates Conference of the NLC held in Abuja.
The TUC said in a statement on Monday that the successful conclusion of the conference by the NLC was “a testimony that no matter the differences, we can come to agreement”.
Crisis had rocked the conference in February when it was time to elect national officers for the Congress.
This necessitated the postponement of the election, which Comrade Ayuba Wabba eventually won on Saturday.
However, a presidential candidate for the election has kicked against its conduct.
Twenty-three affiliate unions of the NLC are planning to organise another election in Lagos on Saturday.
But the TUC said it was heart warming that the NLC was able to overcome the initial challenges to conduct the election.
In a statement signed by Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, the President, and Barrister Musa Lawal, the Secretary General, the TUC acknowledge the challenges the NLC faced in conducting the conference.
The statement said: “It will be recalled the the the centre faced apparent insurmountable challenges in its bid to conduct the elections for leadership change leading to postponement. Majority of Nigerians were as disappointed as those in labour circle believing that the perennial malaise in the political class has caught up with the organized labour hitherto seen as the watchdog of the society. They concluded that the watch dog had finally been conquered. But today we are proud that that impression has been overturned. Thus notwithstanding the earlier challenge, our comrades have proved that the political class has a lot to learn from the organised labour on how to handle elections and how best to manage misunderstanding among children of the same parents. And to labour veterans who – day in, day out – voluntarily gave their time and energy and commitment, standing up all night and day counting votes, we say kudos to your efforts. We are proud of you.
“To the new leadership of congress, we charge you to guard you energy for the task ahead. The only way we can overcome our challenge as workers in a turbulent political terrain is to be united in purpose. Election has come and gone. It is not a do-or-die or a winner takes it all affair. Nor is it a case of the victor and the vanquished. We all have won and that is the attitude we need to put up now if we must overcome the obstacles ahead of us.
“Finally, we assure the new leadership led by Comrade Ayuba Wabba, of the cooperation of our congress even as we charge all pre election factions to dissolve into one united Nigeria Labour Congress for all purposes.The new leadership needs everybody. Once again, we say Congratulations.”
