A security analyst, Folorunsho Atta, has attributed the upsurge in violent crimes to neglect of the Nigeria Police Force by successive governments in Nigeria.
Atta condemned a situation where government does not take preventive actions to prevent violent crimes, rather government preferred to start sourcing for solution after a crime had been committed.
This was even as he wondered why the Nigerian government was not doing anything to introduce scientific investigation into Nigeria Police.
According to Atta, the Police are capable of solving at least 70 per cent of cases reported to it if only the government wakes up from its slumber and funds the force properly.
He stressed that with the underfunding of the force, the activities of armed hoodlums, insurgents and militants would increase on daily basis as these elements are more armed than the security agents.
The crime analyst, who disclosed that Nigeria was safer 10 years ago than now, suggested that to boost the morale of the personnel of the force, the Federal Government should provide them accommodation and working tools.
Atta’s words: “Urban towns in Nigeria should have at least five patrol vehicles for each police divisional headquarters to rapidly response to distress calls. Close Circuit Television should be installed in all police stations across the country. Are all these not possible? Don’t we have the money? If an individual can be given N84 billion contracts by the Central Bank of Nigeria, why can’t the government provides all these necessities to our security agencies?
“Nigeria government has over the years, neglected the police and other security agencies. It had neglected the security of lives and property. The country has always been mortgaged to our corrupt leaders who had spent the money on themselves and their cronies.”
Atta said that if the City of Los Angeles in the United States of America could synchronize its 4,500 traffic signals, what stops the Federal Government of Nigeria from installing CCTV in the three North-Eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
While tasking the government to wake up to its responsibility, Atta said that with little funding, the police force under the leadership of the present Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, would fare well.
He commended Abubakar for the provision of barracks and hospitals.
He also praised Abubakar for his continual and unrelenting effort in attempting to instill discipline into his men.
“The IG had also done well in promoting police games, renovating of the Force State Criminal Investigations Department, police colleges and police academy. Abubakar had also done well in attempting to reduce corruption amongst the personnel of the Force,” said Atta.
