The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service on Thursday said that it generated N19.5 million from 20 companies earlier closed over tax evasion in the month of March.
Folashade Coker-Afolayan, who is the Head of Distrain Unit of the service, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that after meeting their obligations, the companies were reopened.
Coker-Afolayan said that 28 companies were sealed in March for defaulting in remitting N92 million personal income taxes of their workers.
She said the companies sanctioned were required to pay 50 per cent of their liabilities before the unit could consider re-opening them.
The official said that the remaining 50 per cent were expected to be paid in instalments by the erring companies before the end of the year.
“After a company is audited by our auditors, tax liability will be sent to the company but if there are issues, the company has the right to write to the service on it.
“If the liability is more than what the company can afford, the LIRS will meet with the company and arrive at a reasonable figure,” she said.
Coker-Afolayan said the companies were further required to pay additional N250, 000 as distrain cost (fine) for tax evasion.
She said that the LIRS would continue to enforce tax laws to recover what statutorily belonged to the state government.
Coker-Afolayan urged tax payers to remit the taxes of their employees promptly to enable the government to function effectively.
