The Conference of Benue Journalists on Sunday expressed satisfaction over President Muhammadu Buhari’s timely intervention to provide lasting solution to the age long communal violent clashes between the Jukun and Tiv people of Taraba State.

The President also directed the Taraba and Benue State Governors, traditional rulers, specifically the Tor Tiv and the Aku Uka of Wukari, religious and community leaders in the two states to meet urgently to bring an end to persistent violent clashes between Jukun and Tiv people.
Hammawa made the appeal during a peace meeting he convened for Jukun and Tiv stakeholders at the St. Charles Boromeo Pastoral Centre in Jalingo.
Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Saturday, expressed deepest sympathies and condolences to the people and the government of Benue State over losses recorded following the incident.
The National President of the association, Chief Bako Benjamin, while addressing newsmen in Lagos alongside top executive of the association on Monday, said majority of Nigerians are unaware of the calamity and atrocities that has befallen Jukun people in the last four years and the nation’s press does not pay enough attention to report to the world the silent ethnic cleansing and genocide ongoing in southern and central Taraba.
Violence had engulfed parts of Taraba State for over one month, leading to the death of over 50 people and the destruction of property
The agreement was signed at a meeting presided over by the state acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, and the Paramount Ruler of Wukari and Chairman, Taraba Traditional Council, Dr. Shekarau Angyu
The police spokesman, ASP Joseph Kwaji, told newsmen in Jalingo that the suspected assailants also burnt more than 20 houses
The meeting was presided over by Michael Zuokumor, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations and leader of the Presidential Peace Committee
Thirty persons have been arrested in connection with the violence
