Senators clash over Ganduje, Kwankwaso crisis

Senator Isa Misau and Senator Jubril Barau exchanged hot words during plenary on Wednesday over the fight between the Governor of Kano State, Abdulahi Ganduje, and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
This came as the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, directed the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to provide security for the former governor whenever he wants to visit Kano State.
Trouble started on Wednesday when Misau, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, came under Order 43 to raise the issue of insecurity in Kano, explaining that the State’s politics was taking a very dangerous dimension.
He noted that youths who enjoyed politicians’ patronage now brandish dangerous weapons.
Misau said people now carry weapons during rallies in Kano State, adding that the same scenario predated the problem of Boko Haram when a former Governor of Borno State created a outfit known as ECOMOG.
But Barau rebuked Misau for delving into the political issue in Kano State.
Barau said it is very wrong for Misau to raise the issue of Kano State politics on the floor of the Senate when he is not from the state.
He added if Misau continues in this manner, he will also come with a point of order on his fight with the Governor of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar.
Contributing, Senator Kabiru Gaya, representing Kano South Senatorial District, described the situation in the state as a family affair, which will be resolved very soon.
According to Gaya: “Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, the issue of politics in Kano is a family affair and I don’t think it right for discussion on the floor of the Senate.”
When Senator Kwankwaso was called to speak about the matter, he said the issue will be resolved internally, a development which made the Senate to jettison the prayer of Misau, who called for the investigation of the security situation in the state.
In his remarks, Saraki said: “Because by his (Kwankwaso) own observation, as a leader, he shows that there are issues, but definitely there is still room for some kind of solution.
“There is going to be a trend of where politics will begin to creep in our efforts and responsibilities.
“We need to do our best to ensure that we do as much as possible to see how we can manage this kind of issues.
“I think we have to agree at what point it becomes a matter to come to this Senate.
“We need to be able to have a parameter to be able to separate those issues.”
Later during the plenary when the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police, Senator Abu Ibrahim, entered the Senate after the conclusion of the matter, Saraki told him to summon Inspector General of Police and ordered him to provide security for the former governor of Kano State whenever he wishes to go the state.
