The Progressives Solidarity Forum has condemned the planned protest by a handful members of the Indigenous People of Biafra in the United Kingdom on Saturday.
The protest is scheduled for Trafalgar Square, London.
It is over the detained director of Radio Biafra and leader of the IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing treasonable felony charges in Nigeria.
The PSF opined that the protesting members are pre-empting the court over the outcome of the charges against their leader since the bail application for the chief separatist has been scheduled for January 29, a day before their planned protest.
In a statement made available to the press, the Forum spokesperson, Jacob Ogunseye, said the protest is unnecessary since if the ruling is in favour of their leader, he could have walked out of court freely before their protest.
The statement said: “This protest is unnecessary since Mr Kanu could have been granted bail before their date. We should not pre-empt the court since it remains independent of control from anyone.
“If the case finally comes in favour of their leader, would the protest still go on? He queried.
“Any protest on the street of London is to project our country in bad light. The time to desist from such practice is now. It is clear that the supporters of this protest are the few dissenting opinion-makers who do not represent the great people of Igbo land that have all agreed to work for the progress of a united Nigeria under the leadership of President Buhari to solve the economic problem the country is presently facing.”
PSF urged all concerned in the planned protest to consider shelving the idea.
“The planned protest should be discontinued to give peace a chance and re-assert our hope in the judiciary with the belief that justice will be done,” the statement said.
