Promotion arrears: College of Education staff vow to continue strike

The Joint Staff Union in College of Education Akwanga, Nasarawa State has vowed to continue with its strike until the issues of the non-payment of six years promotion arrears to members is addressed.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the joint staff union comprising College of Education Academic Staff Union, Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education of Nigeria and Non Academic Staff Union embarked on the strike on February 4,to press for the payment of the promotion arrears among other demands.
Edward Daniel, Chairman of the joint union, disclosed this in an interview with the NAN on Thursday in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
Daniel explained that the only condition to suspend the strike was the full payment of their arrears from 2013.
According to the Chairman, the management of the college had failed to implement the promotion arrears and annual increment to all staff since 2013.
He said: “We have shown enough understanding with the government and the management despite being insensitive to our welfare.
“This issue has lingered over the years and we have always shown understanding by suspending our industrial action whenever we decide on it.
“However, we have been undermined by the management and left with no option than to speak the language they understand, which is strike.
“We reached an agreement in April 2019 When the management started payment immediately, but decided to stop in September 2019 for no reason and without consulting us.
“So, this time around we will only suspend the strike if we see alert of all our arrears from 2013.”
