servants in Plateau State on Thursday resumed work after the suspension of their four-week-old strike action over unpaid salaries and allowances.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the workers had been on strike since May 5 due to the non-payment of salaries, gratuities, pensions, leave grant and promotions among others.
Jibrin Bancir, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, said the workers agreed to resume work after the new administration in the state agreed to pay two months of their outstanding salaries.
Bancir said the NLC and the state government had also agreed to reopen negotiations on all outstanding issues within seven days of the suspension of the strike.
A correspondent of NAN who visited the Joseph Gomwalk State Secretariat, reports that activities have resumed with some of the workers seen in groups discussing the development.
Other state agencies such as the Plateau State Board of Revenue and the State Water Board were also opened for work.
The strike action had left mountain of refuse on major streets of Jos, the state capital, including the city’s business hub accommodating majority of banks and shopping centres.
Sanni Abayomi, a shop owner, appealed to the state’s Ministry of the Environment to intervene urgently in view of the health hazards involved.
