The National Unity Group, a coalition of interest groups working for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan, on Saturday disclosed that it is holding talks with presidential candidates of nine political parties with the possibility of stepping down for Jonathan.
The Secretary of the NUG, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, told journalists in Abuja that discussion with the leaders of the party is expected to be finalised on Saturday.
Ojougboh refused, however, to reveal the identities of the nine parties involved in the talk.
The Secretary of NUG reasoned that naming the parties concerned could jeopardise the discussion.
Fourteen political parties are fielding candidates for the presidential election billed to hold on February 14.
Ojougboh, who was flanked by a former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife; former Governor of Edo State, Senator Osarentin Osunbor; and Senator Chris Ukpabi, maintained that there is the need for the re-election of Jonathan to enable him conclude the good job he has started.
Ojougboh is the National Vice Chairman of the PDP for the South South Zone.
He stated that it is vital that people are allowed to vote a candidate of their choice.
He said: “The PDP campaign is progressing satisfactorily.
“I want to use this opportunity to thank the people in the North.
“Before now, people said Jonathan will not campaign in the North.
“But you see how he was warmly received by the people.
“We made appreciable progress in the meeting with the candidates.
“They asked that they should be allowed to go back and consult with their parties.
“The meeting was postponed till tomorrow.”
Ezeife said there is the need for continuity because of the numerous achievements of President Jonathan.
