The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the All Progressives Congress for drawing a comparison between a democratically elected presidency with dictatorships.
This was contained in a statement by Olisa Metuh, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, on Thursday in Abuja.
Metuh said that the comparison by the APC was “a tacit acknowledgment that it was planning to take Nigeria back to dictatorship”.
The statement added: “The PDP has punctured an attempt by the APC to dismiss its complicity in the rising wave of insurgency and its adverse effects on national governance.”
The party added that it was “a preposterous distortion of facts and history” to compare the President Goodluck Jonathan presidency to any military government.
Metuh said that under the Jonathan presidency, “the wheel of democracy with its immense benefits had turned full circle, giving Nigerians all liberties”.
He described this as an opportunity that the opposition had applied “so indecently to hurl all manner of abuses on the president”.
It said Nigerians had, however, handed APC a shocker, adding: “We have crossed the red sea and shall never go back to Egypt.”
The statement alleged that the APC planned to destabilise the government and balkanise Nigeria, using insurgency.
It also claimed that the APC’s plan B was to use the same insurgency to “unleash unprecedented mayhem when it loses the 2015 general elections”.
It added that the PDP has evidence of meetings held outside the country in pursuit of “this ignoble objective”.
The statement further argued that though it was common knowledge that insurgency in the North predated the present administration, it was not a mere coincidence.
This, it said, was so especially as the attacks gained “ricocheting tempo” each time Jonathan moved notches higher in his transformation programme.
It said in spite of this well planned distraction, the steady delivery of the transformation programme of President Jonathan was going on.
The statement said: “It is incontrovertible that pound for pound, no previous administration compares to President Jonathan in quality delivery within the first three years of governance.”
The statement again challenged the APC to a public debate on the leadership and successes of President Jonathan and expressed hope that it would pick up the challenge.
