The Peoples Democratic Party has called on Nigerians to shun parochial interests and join forces with government to expose terrorist elements in the country.
The call was contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, on Friday in Abuja.
The statement was in reaction to the recent bomb blast in Nyanya, a suburb of Abuja.
It said that Nigerians must realise that ordinary citizens had generally become targets of such attacks irrespective of religious and ethnic affiliation.
According to the statement, this is the reason why Nigerians must stand up and join hands with government in the fight against terrorism in the country.
The statement said: “Nigerians must realise that it is no longer about the President or the government, neither is it about government officials.
“All Nigerians are under attack. Ordinary people and regular citizens have remained general targets of these enemies of our country.
“Hundreds of innocent Nigerians, Muslims and Christians alike have had their lives brutally ended by the wicked acts of these terrorists.
“Nigerians of different professions pursuing their legitimate endeavours had been brutalised and slaughtered.”
According to Metuh, those behind these devilish acts seek mainly to intimidate, cow, frighten and destroy the nation by imposing a regime of terror, anarchy and chaos.
“They seek to decimate us as a people, destroy our common heritage and bring our nation to its knees, but they will surely fail,” the statement said.
It said that Nigerians would not be frightened nor destroyed by act of terrorism, adding: “Our common resolve to live as one people under God remains irrevocable.”
The party, therefore, called on Nigerians to unite and present a common front against terrorism irrespective of religious, political and ethnic differences in order to win the battle.
It said: “We must refuse to be slaughtered by our enemies; we must show bravery.
“We must go beyond shedding tears at each carnage and forcefully support our government and security men by exposing terrorist elements and their backers among us.”
This was the only way to put the enemy under check and ensure that the blood of the slain was not shed in vain, it said.
The statement said that the PDP would never compromise its belief in Nigerians and the Nigerian project, adding that a brighter future awaited the nation in no distant time.
It said the nation would overcome its challenges, emerged stronger, more united and peaceful if its citizens worked together.
