The Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Reng Ochekpe, has urged media practitioners to desist from negative and sensational journalism that could hinder the achievement of the Transformation Agenda of the present administration.
Speaking at a Strategic Consultative Workshop with Women in Media and Communication on the role of the media in promoting women’s participation in politics on Tuesday, Ochekpe said that to foster a conducive environment for good governance, politics must be played in a friendly manner devoid of rancour.
According to her: “Women participation in politics is in sharp contrast with their male counterpart.
“Men heat up politics by their inordinate ambition of wining elections at all times, while women on the other hand approach politics differently by embracing partnership.”
Ochekpe called on Women to propagate their agenda by partnering with women journalists.
She harped on the need for them to strive to sustain the various achievements of the present administration.
In an interview with journalists on her plan for rural women, Ochekpe explained that the Ministry initiated thousands of small water scheme in 2013.
The water scheme is expected to improve the access of women to water, thereby saving them lost man-hour and energy in trekking long distances to fetch water.
The Ministry also embarked on Community Led Total Sanitation Campaign to different rural areas.
This would reduce incidences of water borne diseases as a result of poor sanitation.
Ochekpe disclosed that the Ministry has commenced its G-WIN Programme.
The programme would develop the capacity of women to take active part in development of water resources and also manage them.
