The Deputy Governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu, on Sunday in Benin, said that there would be no automatic shirt for any athlete in the state at the upcoming 20th National Sports Festival.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Musa Ebebomusa, quoted Shaibu as disclosing this while addressing a six-man committee constituted for a successful outing of the state team at the sports festival.
“There will be no automatic ticket for anybody. Every athlete, old or young, has to compete for a place in the 32 sports lined up for the festival,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the sports fiesta, tagged “Edo 2020”, will hold at different centres in Benin, the state capital, from March 20 to April 4.
“We must not fail; we are committing all these resources because we want to redefine national competitive sports in Nigeria.
“We are not just hosting; we are hosting to win, and win clean to show the world what national sports festival should be.
“The Third Edo Sports Festival is not going to be a jamboree. Rather, it is expected to serve as a ground for talent hunt to discover young and fresh athletes who will replace the tired and ageing ones.”
