The interim board of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) has promised to evolve a system that will be envy of everybody with plan to lure big time businessmen to invest in the league.
According to Mike Idoko, chairman of the committee, their intervention was in the best interest of the league, adding that they were not on the board to perpetrate themselves, rather to ensure the league moves forward.
“We are interventionists not to stay in office beyond the stipulated time. We are not going to do anybody’s bidding but to give all stakeholders fair ground to operate. Throughout the time we will be in office, we not receive allowance but we will try to enthrone a system of transparency.
“We will ensure the new chairman is somebody without sentiment, who has independent mind and who will take the league to the business community. The clubs have suffered enough from the inefficiency of the system and this is an opportunity to join the football business world. If we get it right, it will encourage multinational companies to start investing in the Nigerian league and give the state governments financial respite”, Idoko said.
Meanwhile, at the end of their first meeting held Thursday morning in Abuja and presided over by the chairman Idoko, the interim board promised to run a better league.
Speaking shortly after the early morning meeting held at Denis Hotel Abuja, a member of the board, Alloy Chukwuemeka said the decision taken by the clubs to sack the Baribote led board was in the best interest of the league stressing that their position had been communicated to all relevant bodies like NSC, NFF and the secretariat of NPL.
He added that the Interim board is in the process of meeting with secretariat and taking charge of normal football administration processes in matter of hours.
According to him “Yes as you can see we have the mandate of clubs to ensure that we take charge within the short time in interim capacity. So we are working towards getting things put in place for a better league next season.”
“We have communicated the NSC, NFF and NPL secretariat of the situation on ground for their understanding and for their consideration.
“We hope to get the secretariat staff to work towards ensuring that all processes and registration formalities are on-going so that we can commence the league soon after the NFF final ratifications at the Annual General Assembly.”
“We have also resolved to work with the outgone board in any area we need their advice in the spirit of sportsmanship and they should see their exit not as a witch hunt but rather a sacrifice they need to make to ensure the growth of the league.”
Meanwhile, the board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will meet today to consider the decision of the Premier League clubs amongst other issues.
