Activities at the Jos Electricity Distribution Plc Headquarters located at 9, Ahmadu Bello Way, Jos, Plateau State, has been shut down on the orders of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
The place is to remain sealed for seven days pending the outcome of the meeting with the Union on anti-workers stance of some PHCN companies.
The area comprises the headquarters in Jos, with branches in Benue, Bauchi, Gombe States.
They have over 1,000 disengaged staff of the former PHCN that are yet to receive their entitlements.
The action of the union, according to the state Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Jibrin Bancir, the issue has been lingering since last year as a result of the sale of PHCN to a private company, AURA Nigeria Limited.
Bancir said since then they still have outstanding salaries and allowances, which brought about series of problems, the shut down order became imperative.
“We are constrained to inform congress of the anti-workers stance of some of the owners who took over the privatized units of power Holding company of Nigeria,” he said.
Bancir explained that their plight had to do with the anti-Union activities of the new owners, which is a source of concern to the NLC.
He added: “We have to engage them with the aim of restoring de-unionisation of workers, casualisation, under-payment of workers remuneration, sacking of union leaders after legitimate struggle for workers’ rights, continued defrauding of Nigerians through increase in fixed tariffs and continued non-metering of electricity customers.”
He added that the labour union had sent communication to the company since last year and since it appeared that they are proving to be very difficult, the union had to move in.
