Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Wednesday ransacked a village, Kushaka, in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, leaving nine dead and several others injured.
According to an eyewitness account, the midnight operation was carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen, fully masked with fierce costumes and raided the farming community, wielding dangerous weapons.
It was gathered that the incident, which occurred at about 2am on Wednesday, caught the villagers napping as they lost valuable possessions to the invaders.
According to the source, the villagers had retired for the night around 8pm but were suddenly roused from their sleep by gunshots sounds as the invading herdsmen ransacked house to house and shooting indiscriminately and inflicting cuts on their victims. Some of the villagers managed to escape to the bush but the elderly women and children were not as lucky as they fell to the fire power of the invading forces.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Richard Adamu Oguche, said from preliminary reports, the Command gathered that nine persons lost their lives in the midnight raid on Kushaka village.
The PPRO however noted that it was too early to attribute the attack to any terrorist group but said from on the spot preliminary report, it was attributed to herdsmen.
“We cannot draw any conclusion now but we are monitoring the situation and no arrest has been made,” Oguche said.
Commenting on the incident, the Chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area admitted that there was an attack on the village but said he could not ascertain the number of casualties.
He however appealed to the State Police Command to reinforce security in the area.
