The Coach of national aquatic team, Saheed Obadina, on Wednesday said only one swimmer would represent Nigeria in the African swimming championship beginning in South Africa on Wednesday.
Obadina told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the swimmer, Yellow Yeiyah, departed the country on Wednesday morning for the tournament.
He said that the Nigeria Aquatic Federation was constrained to send only one representative because of lack of funds.
Obadina said: “We had, because of challenge of funds, pencilled two swimmers to go for the championship but at the end, we were forced to take only person because of the funds issue.”
Obadina said that Yeiyah, who represented Nigeria at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, was one of the best swimmers the federation currently had.
He said: “Yeiyah is one of our finest swimmers and that is why he is representing the country.
“He will be participating in 50metres Butterfly, 100metres Butterfly and 50metres Freestyle events.
“Our preparation for the event was not quite solid; so, we are not expecting too much from him, but we hope that he comes top in the events.”
The coach said that the championship was being held in Bloemfontein and that it would end on Sunday.
