NFIU Guidelines: Kogi LG workers insist on full salary payment

Local Government workers in Kogi have called for full payment of their June salary in line with the guidelines of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.
The workers made the demand in a statement jointly issued by the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria and Non Academic Staff Union in Lokoja on Tuesday.
The statement, issued at the end of emergency meetings of the unions held across the three senatorial districts of the state, was also signed by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives.
Audu Tijani, Alao Williams, Mohammed Bake, Bada Ibrahim, Gbadebo Moses and Adeyemi Emmanuel, who are chairmen of the unions in Kogi-West and Kogi Central Senatorial Districts signed the statement on behalf of their respective unions.
The statement came amid tension across the state over non-payment of salary to Local Government workers in the state.
The workers lamented the delay in the payment of their salaries, more than one week after the state Joint Allocation Committee meeting.
They called on the State Government to act appropriately by releasing the money due to all the 21 Local Government councils immediately.
They stated: “The NFIU directive in respect of the Local Government financial autonomy should be adhered to strictly as stipulated in the guidelines.
“Our workers and pensioners have unanimously agreed that nothing less than 100 per cent of their salaries, allowances and pensions should be paid to them,” the statement read in part.”
According to the workers, any attempt to betray their welfare by the respective Directors of Local Government and treasurers will meet with vehement resistance.
They also called for the suspension of all tendered notices of projects, and called for more attention on “stomach infrastructural development”.
The unions said any Local Government obtaining any loan without the prior knowledge of the joint unions does so at its own risk.
They directed all their members to cooperate and strictly comply with the directive of the NFIU and henceforth serve as whistle blowers in all the council areas.
