Newcastle boss, Alan Pardew, paid tribute to the Ameobi brothers after they rode to Newcastle United’s rescue and booked a mouth-watering tie with Leeds in the next round of the Capital One Cup.
Shola Ameobi scored in the 78th minute to end a near four-hour wait for a first goal of the season before younger brother Sammy hit an injury-time second.
Pardew feels the older Ameobi has been boosted by a call-up from Nigeria, and believes he is in the best form since Pardew took over.
“It was a nice moment for their family,” he said. “Shola has looked the best I’ve seen him pre-season. I think the Nigeria selection has given him a boost. I can see it in his eyes.
“He’s looking forward to the internationals coming up and that benefited us. He was terrific in the second half.
“I thought Sammy put in a real good display offensively and defensively. We’ve had problems with him defensively in the past. I’ve never doubted his talent but he’s put it all together this pre-season. He was the difference between the two teams until Hatem Ben Arfa came on. He really opened the game up for us.”
It was a difficult game for United but they eventually eased past Morecambe, who had two chances cleared off the line by Dan Gosling in the first half.
Pardew now wants the club to kick on and beat Fulham on Saturday to make it an acceptable start to the campaign after a difficult summer.
