In efforts to strengthen community resilience against disasters, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has established a new Department of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) to harness resources towards the increase of local capacities at the grassroots.
The new department was approved by the governing board in conformity with the standards of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). It is expected to enhance the organizational structure of the Agency and enable greater service delivery in the efficient and effective coordination of disaster management in the country.
Through the new department, NEMA will accord more attention to strengthening of volunteerism in disaster management, promote initiatives for partnership with international and local stakeholders to develop and implement programmes and activities that will identify hazards, reduce the risks and increase resilience in the communities.
It will also serve the functions of enlisting the supports of external donors/development partners to strengthen national reduction capacities.
Other functions of the department include the coordination in development and implementation of the National Action plan for Disaster Risk Reduction in Nigeria, facilitate national institutional capacity building programmes to address specific gaps of various stakeholders based on the results of baseline assessment and studies.
The department is headed by Mr Aliyu Baffale Sambo as the acting Director.
