To enhance safety measures at the Nnamdi Arzikiwe International Airport Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency has stationed an emergency Response Intervention Vehicle and Mobile Intensive Care Unit ambulance at the airport for swift response to any emergency situation in the area.
Commissioning the emergency response equipment at the airport, the Director General of NEMA, Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Sidi, said the stationing of the equipment was in line with the agency’s commitment to promote efficiency in disaster management in the country.
Sani-Sidi said it was also in furtherance to the collaboration between NEMA and stakeholders in the aviation sector for greater safety in the airports and its environs.
The Director General of NEMA, who was represented by the Deputy Director of Search and Rescue, Vincent Owan, said the newly-acquired equipment, packed with necessary accessories, would be jointly operated by officials of NEMA and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria.
He disclosed that arrangement has been made to train the operators on the use of the RIV and MICU, while NEMA would retain the responsibility for their maintenance and fueling.
Sani-Sidi said the positive disposition of the stakeholders to disaster issues have translated to greater national consciousness towards disaster management.
He therefore said NEMA would continue to build on the gains by sustaining the conduct of regular simulation exercises in bringing them together to identify their respective roles under emergency situations.
In his remark, the Managing Director of FAAN, Saleh Dunoma, who was represented by the General Manager of the North Central, Oluwole Osituyo, appreciated NEMA for the concern in deploying the equipment to boost the roles of its Aerodrome Rescue Fire Fighting Services.
The ceremony was witnessed by inspectors from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and officers of the Aerodrome Rescue Fire Fighting Services, led by the Assistant General Manager, Ibrahim Abdulazeez.
