NBA lauds judgment on judiciary autonomy

The Nigerian Bar Association has lauded the judgment of Justice Adeniyi Ademola of a Federal High Court in Abuja on the financial autonomy for the judiciary.
This information was contained in a statement signed by the NBA President, Okey Wali (SAN), on Wednesday in Abuja.
The statement said the practice where the executive disbursed funds to the judiciary was not only unconstitutional but a threat to the independence of the judiciary.
The statement said: “It is important to note that the case was about the executive disbursing funds to the judiciary.
“A practice the NBA has not only repeatedly stated was unconstitutional, but also viewed as threatening the independence of the judiciary.”
The statement stressed that the provisions of Sections 83(1); 212(3) and 162(9) of the 1999 Constitution were clear with respect to funding of the judiciary.
therefore called on all stakeholders to comply with the judgment and orders of the court to implementing the constitutional provisions.
The statement said that financial autonomy of the judiciary would ensure its independence and rule of law.
