Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Monday received the Torch of Unity for the 19th National Sports Festival billed to start later in the month in Abuja.
Ugwuanyi, while receiving the torch, said that his administration would ensure that athletes from the state performed creditably at the biennial event.
He said that Enugu State was reputed as one of the states that had participated in the fiesta since it debuted in 1991.
The governor said that his administration had introduced deliberate policies to breed sports talents due to its commitment to youth empowerment.
He said that it was gratifying that the results of such investment had been yielding positive results.
Ugwuanyi said that a clear example was the emergence of Rangers International FC of Enugu as the 2018 Federations Cup champions.
He said: “Our school sports development programmes have also provided a platform for nurturing of athletes.”
Ugwuanyi also wished participating states and athletes well during the event.
