The National Women Affairs Committee of Nasrul Lahi L Fathi Society Of Nigeria on Saturday graduated 318 women from its vocational school in Lagos.
The seventh graduation of the school was part of activities marking the 14th Annual Women’s Week of the society.
They were trained in various vocations in which 36 went for tie and dye, 72 were trained in decoration and events, 40 were trained in bag making, 89 in catering, 76 graduated in jewellery making and five in communication skill.
Alhaja Nofisat Arogundade, the NASFAT Secretary, National Women Affairs, said the initiative was part of the society’s poverty alleviation programmes.
Arogundade said: “We are inspiring our women to do something extra to have another vocation apart from the businesses they are used to.
“We have given them entrepreneurial skills, which they can use to assist their families.
“If women are empowered, they will not turn their children to commodities for making money or use them for child labour or give them out in early marriage.”
Arogundade said the society would encourage families to raise children with good morals and the fear of God for a better society.
She added that the beneficiaries would be monitored to ensure that they properly explored the opportunities in their various vocations.
Fayo Williams, the Executive Director, Rely Supply Limited, told newsmen on the sideline that if entrepreneurial potential of Nigerians were properly harnessed, it would bridge the unemployment gap.
Willaims said the country had abundant natural resources for everyone who could identify and tap into the opportunities.
The society then gave some widows and the graduating students various working tools, including sewing machines and grinding machines, to boost their vocations.
