Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has called on aggrieved members of the Black Stars to bury the hatchet and return to the team for their crucial forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Mahama made the call on Saturday in Accra, when Michael Essien, currently on loan with Real Madrid FC, paid him a courtesy visit alongside some notable international footballers.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the international players were in Ghana to participate in the Michael Essien Foundation Charity Cup.
The president urged the Ghana Football Association to resolve all the pending issues that led to the exit of the players from the Black Stars.
He said: “The current situation where some players have decided to stay away from the national team is not good and should be corrected before it negatively affects the team.
“We need to all join hands to take the national team to the world cup in Brazil.
“Everybody has to make his input in the process.”
Mahama commended Essien for floating the foundation, aimed at catering for the less-privileged.
He said: “This step is complementary of the policies and programmes of our government which are aimed at bringing succour to ordinary Ghanaians.
“It is a thing of joy that many Ghanaian organisations are now alive to their corporate social responsibilities, providing certain amenities for their host communities.”
He described Essien’s initiative as a laudable, calling on other well meaning Ghanaians to use opportunities that were available to them to the advantage of the country.
