A Twitter user, Omotoyosi, took to her handle on Friday to raise the alarm about being raped and kidnapped in a house located at Akoka, Lagos State.
The alarm led to a response by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command who arrested all men in the house.
However, she was not found on the premises.
According to another Twitter user, who visited the scene, it appeared the lady and the guy in question had a “thing”.
The Twitter user also stated that the police picked up all the men they met at the address the lady mentioned.
She added that some residents of the area claimed the lady in question was just chasing clout and that nothing like that happened.
Indeed, shortly after her tweet went viral, Omotoyosi shared a video online where she said she was fine and was neither raped nor kidnapped.
Meanwhile, Omotoyosi’s elder brother has stated that she was chasing clout.
In a voice note he did and asked a friend to release online, the older brother said she was just chasing clout by making a false claim.
He stated that Toyosi said she didn’t know that the tweet she shared would go viral.
He said their dad has been crying since she made the tweet raising a false alarm.
One of those arrested noted that he was getting ready to go to work when he saw Omotoyosi’s tweet.
He wrote: “I was preparing for work this morning when I saw a tweet of a girl, Toyosi that she was kidnapped and being raped, with an address and phone number to call.
“I was about to call the police to inform them when I saw that the address was one of my close friend, Ayo (name changed), I paused for a minute and decided to call my friend first and confirm what was going on.
“I sent him the tweet and asked him what was happening, he said he didn’t know anything that was going on, he’s been sleeping the whole night and was just waking up.
“He’s off on Thursdays so he’s home, I asked him to head to work because it was certain the police were going to raid the house sooner or later, he said he was going to clean up and go to work, I kept on checking twitter for updates and it was being debated as to whether the girl was saying the truth or not because she released a video saying she’s safe but didn’t seem like it because she looked shaken up and didn’t move around which prompted suspicions as to her making the video under duress, then I saw another update that police were already heading to my friend’s house.
“I tried calling him severally, he wasn’t responding and I later saw a video of the police escorting him inside his house with him in cuffs, I tried calling every one I could then found out they were headed to Bariga Police station, was updated later that he was trying to argue with the police and he got beaten and detained, the brother of Toyosi later tweeted that she’s safe and he’s dragging her to the police station so the arrested people can be freed as she was safe and nothing was done to her.
“I was still following up on this when I heard that Ayo’s sister, who is a lawyer, had gone to the station with a few of his friends to get him out as he wasn’t involved in any way, he was gotten out of detention and I confirmed by giving him a call, later saw that Toyosi had been arrested and charged for public disturbance.
“This incident is one of the reasons why online call for help won’t be trusted, even the real ones as in the case of Dr Chinelo Nwando(RIP), who was aboard the Kaduna-Abuja train when she called for help about the terrorist attack and wasn’t taken serious by the online community until confirmation was gotten on her death.
“I hope this would be a lesson to many others.”
The spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed to The Eagle Online that Omotoyosi is currently being interrogated at the Bariga Police Station.
Hundeyin said: “Toyosi is being interrogated in Bariga Police Station.
“After the interrogation, I will update the public on Twitter.”
