The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed Senator Adamu Aliero as the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate for Kebbi Central Senatorial District in the forthcoming general election.
The Supreme Court delivered the judgment on Monday in a ruling read by Justice Amina Augie in a well fought battle.
In a lead judgment by Justice Centus Nweze, the apex court held that Aliero’s appeal was allowed and declared that “the judgment of the lower court, which declared Saidu Haruna as the winner of the Kebbi Central Senatorial District primary is hereby set aside.”
However, while four justices on the panel unanimously agreed with the lead judgment, Justice Emmanuel Agim disagreed.
The judgment followed an appeal by Aliero challenging the decision of the Court of Appeal to nullify his candidacy.
The ruling has set the stage for a clash between Aliero and the outgoing Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, who is flying the flag of the All Progressives Congress.
The Eagle Online recalls that Aliero dumped the APC for the PDP and went on to win the primaries.
This followed his complaints before the primaries of the APC, over which he said there will not be justice and fair play.
Bagudu eventually emerged winner of the APC primaries.
