Justice Oputa dies at 96 in Charlie Boy’s house

Renowned jurist, Justice Akunne Chukwudifu Oputa, is dead.
Oputa was 96.
He is the father of weird musician, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlie Boy.
Justice Oputa was at the head of the National Human Rights Commission, which investigated human rights abuses under the military.
The commission was set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The commission, popularly called the Oputa Panel, later extended its scope of coverage to include the years after independence.
Oputa rose to the peak of his profession when he was nominated to the Supreme Court.
He was admitted to Inns of Court (Grays Inn) in 1953.
Oputa was appointed a judge of the then Eastern Region in 1963.
His judicial career spanned 26 years through four regions, states and territories, including the High Court of the defunct enclave of Biafra, ending with his retirement from the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1989 at the age of 65.
Oputa had been bedridden in the last one year.
The Eagle Online had some months back exclusively reported how his family flew him out of the country for further medical care.
However, he was said top have returned to the country after his condition improved.
Sources said he was taken to Charlie Boy’s house in Abuja where he was recuperating.
He was said to be seeing a physiotherapist but suddenly gave up on Sunday in Charlie Boy’s house in Abuja.
