The President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has formally announced the resignation of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to the National Executive Committee of the party.
Jonathan made the announcement at the commencement of the meeting of the NEC on Thursday in Abuja.
The meeting is taking place at the Wadata Plaza National Secretariat of the party.
Throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, Tukur denied tendering his resignation letter.
As reported by The Eagle Online, Tukur tendered his resignation letter to Jonathan on Wednesday after a valedictory meeting with members of the National Working Committee of the party.
He was not at the National Caucus meeting of the party held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday evening.
The meeting took place after he had submitted his resignation letter.
He was, however, at the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the party later on Wednesday.
The meeting was also held at the Presidential Villa.
As a former national chairman of the PDP, Tukur is automatically a member of its BoT.
A substantive successor will be elected for Tukur in March as earlier reported on this news website.
In acting capacity, the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus, will preside over the affairs of the PDP until March, The Eagle Online had reported.
Jonathan told the NEC meeting on Thursday: “We have some internal problems that have been agitating the mind of the people….
“For us to make sure that we rest these issues, the party chairman agreed to step aside.
“He’s not guilty in anyway.
“In fact, I have to give him (a new) assignment that is tougher than handling PDP because we need people like Bamanga Tukur to market this country and market the PDP….
“From today, people will begin to see PDP getting stronger and stronger.
“Before the end of March, people will just relax and say it’s over.
“Members of this party are still faithful to the party.
“Of course, we have few defection, which, to me, it’s normal.
“I don’t think it’s something we should worry ourselves too much because as long as we continue to work together, as long as we do things the way we should do, I believe and I’m convinced that PDP will continue to be the number one party in this country.”
Jonathan publicly handed Tukur’s letter to the party Secretary and suggested another NEC meeting for Monday to discuss the process for the emergence of a new chairman to come from the North East, where Tukur hails from.
