The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed insinuation in some quarters that the commission may be under pressure to declare Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections inconclusive.
Reacting to a question while addressing a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, dismissed the rumour.
According to Jega: “We are not under any pressure to declare inconclusive election.”
He used the opportunity to warn Nigerians, especially those active on the social media, to desist from announcing election results ahead of INEC’s formal declaration of winner.
According to him, it is an offence to pre-empt INEC by announcing results.
The INEC boss also confirmed receipt of the protest letter from the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, calling for the cancellation and rescheduling of the election.
He promised that the various allegations raised in the letter are being investigated hence no decision has been taking yet on the request.
Jega also promised that any INEC staff found culpable would be sanctioned appropriately.
He equally said only about 500 out of the 15,000 card readers deployed for Saturday’s elections failed.
