President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday promised he would cooperate with the Ekiti state Governor, Ayo Fayose, to develop the state if voted into power in the February 14 presidential election.
The President, who made the pledge during his campaign on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, also warned the people of the state to stay clear of politicians telling them lies in order to win their votes, promising not to rule by deceit if re-elected in the February 14 general election.
The state government had earlier declared a half day holiday for both civil servants and public schools to enable them give a rousing welcome to the the president.
Jonathan said: “I will not deceive you.
“We promise to work with Governor Ayo Fayose if re-elected to improve Ekiti State.
“Some politicians are going around to deceive Nigerians.
“We have been following politicians from the ’50s, 60s, 70s and we all know what politicians of yesteryears stood for.
“Our own way of defining politics is dignified.”
Reeling out some of his achievements in the state since 2011, Jonathan promised to dualise the Ado-Akure Road and Ado-Ifaki Road if re-elected.
The President also promised to encourage commercial farming in order to make it more attractive to young graduates.
He said some malpractices plaguing the agriculture sector had been minimised with the use of Information Technology.
“You must create IT to prevent crime and corruption in the system,” he said.
He said his government, through the various interventions programmes of his administration had been able to create about two million jobs per per year through Job Board, a presidential committee headed by the Vice President Namadi Sambo.
Jonathan said his dream was to make the next generation of Nigerians job creators, adding: “In the next five years or so, these people captured under the ‘You win’ programme will be exporters of their own products.”
The National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, in his address, said the country had recorded a lot of achievements under President Jonathan, urging them to re-elect him for a second term.
The campaign coordinator of the party in the South West and Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, challenged the opposition All Progressives Congress to tell Nigerians if its presidential candidate, General Mohammadu Buhari, had the required certificate to contest the election or had sworn to an affidavit that his certificate is with the Army authority, adding: “Fighting corruption starts from personal integrity.”
Mimiko boasted that the entire South West would vote for Jonathan in the election.
He described Jonathan as a progressive president that deserves a second term.
Fayose lambasted those criticising the President for none performance, especially the opposition, saying they have nothing to offer the country.
He said: “All the APC wants is to occupy the seat.
“The North should wait for their turn.
“Buhari is not the candidate of the North, but that of Bola Tinubu.
“Anybody who wants to be the president of the country must have the necessary certificates.”
Earlier, during a courtesy call on the Ewi of Ado, Oba Rufus Aladesanmi, the monarch asked for more dividends of democracy for Ekiti State people from Jonathan.
Also, the Chairman of the Council of Obas in the state, Oba Adamo Onitaji, solicited for the construction of a airport in Ado-Ekiti and more job creation for the youth of Ekiti State.
