The Eagle Online recalls that the facility of the House of David Church went up in flames at about 11am on Wednesday as preparations for the programmes were being firmed up.
Emergency succeeded in extinguishing an inferno after virtually everything had been consumed.
Ibrahim Farinloye, Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos.
Farinloye said the fire, which started at about 0011 hours at the rear end of the church, was not noticed by the church workers, but by a passerby who drew the attention of the indoor workers to the incident, adding: “No injury or casualty was recorded.”
He said that the church was preparing for a five-day crusade beginning from Wednesday and ending on February 4.
He said that the premises, said to have been leased and insured, were hired by the church.
Farinloye added: “It was found out that due to the expected turn out of congregants for the crusade, the church workers had been undergoing training by the Fire Service to prepare for any eventualities.
“Agencies on ground are NEMA, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, State Fire Service and the Nigeria Police.”
Reacting to the incident, the Senior Pastor of the church, Sola Osunmakinde, said: “I came here this (Wednesday) morning and everything was going on well, we were setting up.
“All of a sudden, we started hearing something up there and there was fire.”
Osunmakinde said the Lagos State Fire Service was called upon but “painfully, we watched till everything got burnt completely.
“Everything.
“Nobody anticipated this.
“The most important thing is that no life was lost.
“It’s a painful experience, no doubt but all things work together for good.”
