Governors beg INEC to discount computers for sale

Following the offer made by the Independent National Electoral Commission to sell about 78,701 laptops and webcams to states for distribution to secondary schools, governors are begging the INEC boss, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to grant them discount.
The cost per computer was not however disclosed.
The computers were excess ones left after the pre-2011 voter registration exercise.
Briefing correspondents after the NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo State said the Council agreed that the states would buy the machines, but requested that INEC should give them a “discount of 25 per cent for the old machines and 10 per cent for the new ones.”
“Further negotiation on the mode of payment will be finalized by the committee with INEC,” Oshiomhole said.
Council also resolved to discuss extensively the issues of corruption in the their next meeting in July.
This was consequent upon a report presented by the National Seminar on Corruption, which was held in Minna, Niger State in collaboration with the National Planning Commission.
The organisers, Niger State, as part of its key recommendations, had stated that good leadership and independence of the judiciary was paramount to checkmating corruption.
It also stated that a National Development Plan was required for economic and social stability, noting that offenders must be punished publicly and merit genuinely elevated above partisanship.
“Council agreed to look into the report and prepare inputs and contributions on how to work out the best approach on corruption in the country,” Musa Ibeto, the Niger State deputy governor, said.
