The first ever road race over hills and sandy path in Nigeria, the Okpekpe Road Race, sponsored by telecommunications giant, Globacom, holds on May 4, 2013 at Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
A statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by Globacom stated that the 10-kilometre Okpekpe Road Race is the first of its kind in the country.
Globacom is the official telecoms partner of the race.
The statement added that over 4,000 athletes from African countries and beyond, including the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, would be in the agrarian community of Okpekpe to participate in the race.
According to the statement: “Globacom is partnering with the organizers of the Okpekpe Road Race because we will always support any venture that will lead to the development of human mind.”
While reiterating Globacom’s commitment to the development of sports in Nigeria, the statement added: “The company is not new to an event like this as we have over the years sponsored the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon and other sporting activities across the world.
“With every sense of modesty, we wish to say that our support for sports in Nigeria is not only legendary but unprecedented.
“Not quite long ago, the Dream Team of the Glo Soccer Academy was in Manchester, United Kingdom on a training tour.
“We promise to continue to support sports in Nigeria and the Okpekpe Road Race is one of such initiatives deserving of support by well meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies.”
Organized by Pamodzi Sports Marketing, with the full support of the Edo State Government and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, the Okpekpe Road Race will be covered live by Super Sports and AIT.
