Islamic scholars and political analysts will on Thursday gather in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Welfare Foundation, with discussion on Nigeria and the Muslim community.
A statement by the National Coordinator of the Foundation, Aliu Badmus, said that the roundtable discussion will centred on its theme: “The Muslim Ummah in the Nigerian Polity: Issues and Options.”
Scholars and political analysts like Dr. Usman Bugaje, Prof. Mojeed Alabi and Dr. Lateefat Durosinmi are some of the speakers slated for the one-day event at Kwara Hotels, Ilorin on Thursday.
Badmus said that Bugaje, a former member of the House of Representatives and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, will speak on: “Securing the Rightful Position for Muslims in Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Landscape.”
Alabi, a former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, will speak on: “Muslims and Political Developments in Nigeria,” while Durosinmi, a former National Amirah of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria, will talk on: “Muslim Women and Children in the Nigerian Project.”
The national coordinator said that Prof. Bayo Lawal will chair the event slated for 11am, with dignitaries from all over Nigeria in attendance.
It will be recalled that the Islamic Welfare Foundation was established 30 years ago by a group of Muslim intellectuals and activists led by the late Alhaji Saka Fagbo to serve as a think-tank for the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.
Its goal is to champion the intellectual approach to the propagation of Islam and to steer Muslims away from emotional to rational reaction on issues.
The Foundation has conducted a number of researches on issues of interest to Muslim in Nigeria and published the reports.
