Flood: World Bank to conduct post disaster needs assessment

Given the unprecedented flood disaster that ravaged 28 states across Nigeria recently, the National Emergency Management Agency in collaboration with the World Bank and some international donor organisations will soon conduct a post disaster needs assessment.
This becomes necessary in view of the plans to embark on rehabilitation and reconstruction of communities affected by the disaster.
The Director General of NEMA, Mohammed Sani-Sidi, who was represented by Director of Finance and Account, Hakeem Akinbola, stated this at the orientation workshop for officials of State Emergency Management Agencies, State Ministries of Agriculture and State Ministries of the Environment and Housing on Tuesday in Abuja.
Sani-Sidi said the workshop was intended to provide participants with adequate skills, knowledge and techniques on how to effectively handle the challenge.
The NEMA boss said the orientation workshop would also afford the Federal Government and the international community the opportunity to execute plans and actions for rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery of communities affected by flood disasters.
The United Nations Country Resident Coordinator, Daouda Toure, disclosed that “the post disaster needs assessment seeks to assess the impact of natural disaster on infrastructure as well as people and it results in a joint recovery strategy and framework that includes the full financial costs of recovery and reconstruction.”
Toure said the assessment will compile information on economic damages and losses and human impacts of the disaster on the communities.
Toure said the UN, the World Bank and the European Union were ready to support the Federal Government in the spirit of the 2008 Joint Agreement on post Crisis Cooperation.
