Edwin Okon, the Super Falcons’ Head Coach, says the team’s Group D foes at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup will bring out the best in the team.
A statement from the team’s Media Officer, Gracious Akujobi, quoted the national senior women’s team coach as saying he was not afraid of the big names in the group.
The Super Falcons were on Saturday drawn in Group D with US, Australia and Sweden for the World Cup scheduled for Canada.
Okon was quoted as saying: “We are not afraid of any team, as no group is simple.
“Every group is tough and having the U.S. in our group does not put any fear in us. Instead, it will give us the extra determination to train and prepare better.
“And going into the World Cup as African champions, they (our opponents) will also be afraid of us.
“We have set a target for ourselves, which is going farther than we have ever done in the World Cup and we know that this is achievable. But we cannot afford to fear any team.”
The coach was also quoted as saying that his team needed to focus more on preparing well for the tournament, rather than on information about their opponents.
Okon said: “We don’t need to know so much about our opponents. All we need to do is to prepare very well and then come out to play.
“We are not nervous about any team, because every team is good. We just have to prepare very well.
“But, the truth is that we are hoping to top our group, which is our target for now.
“With God on our side and good preparation, we hope to top the group and go all the way.”
The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup will hold from June 6 to July 5.
Nigeria will start its campaign at the tournament against Sweden on June 8, face Australia on June 12 and take on the US on June 16.
