The Federal Government has selected 15 local government areas in Kano State for the implementation of its National Social Safety Net Programme.
The programme is aimed at empowering poor and vulnerable households in the country.
Peter Papka, the National Coordinator, National Safety Net Coordinating Office, disclosed this at the training workshop on Community Based Targeting Team for identification of poor and vulnerable in Kano on Wednesday.
Papka said a total of 180 persons selected from the 15 local government areas would be trained on selection process that would guide them on identification of poor and vulnerable households in the areas.
He said under the programme, the Federal Government would work in partnership with the state Ministry of Planning and Budget to identify the poor and vulnerable households in the state.
Papka said: “While government spending on poverty reduction interventions has been on the increase, there has not been a commensurate movement of people out of poverty.
“In recognition of this unacceptable trend and its implication to national development, the Federal Government felt it necessary to build stronger institutions and systems to sustain poverty reduction interventions.”
Papka said currently, no fewer than 11 states had been selected for the programme under the first phase, while nine additional states would be engaged in the programme in the next six months.
In his remarks, the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Ganduje, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, said the state government had earmarked N500 million for the implementation of a similar programme in the state, this year.
Ganduje commended the Federal Government for initiating the programme, which he said would go a long way in alleviating the hardship being experienced by the less-privileged in the society.
