The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has described as contradictory, diversionary and petty the comments made by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola over the recent visit of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to Lagos State to associate and support all women in Lagos State, including those of the Action Congress of Nigeria.
Fashola had criticised the closure of key roads on Victoria Island during the visit of Jonathan, leading to a traffic gridlock for most part of the day.
The PDP said the traffic gridlock was as a result of inadequate and dilapidated road network in the state.
The party also said Fashola’s criticism amounted to the pot calling the kettle black as the state government had, during the birthday bash for a former Governor of the state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, blocked several key roads.
The party said: “On 30/3/2012, commuters around the whole Lagos metropolis suffered heavy traffic jam that lasted whole day just because Governor Fashola decided to celebrate the Birthday of his godfather.
“On that day markets, state secretariat, House of Assembly, parastatals, agencies, LG councils were completely shut down administratively to commemorate the said birthday!
“Governor Fashola spent and also encouraged LG Chairmen to expend Lagosians taxes on a near one month unnecessary birthday celebration without any concern for the sensibilities of Lagosians.”
The Lagos State PDP said at a period doctors were on strike, Fashola ignored that sector but delved into such petty issue as the visit of the First Lady to Lagos State, adding: “We want to advise Governor Fashola and ACN that they are the guilty of most allegations against opposition and therefore should thread softly and not quick to criticise, because he who lives in a glass house should not throw stone.”
