Liverpool left it late again in a 2-1 win over Wolves with Roberto Firmino netting in the 84th minute to restore his team’s 16 point lead in the table with a 14th straight Premier League victory on Thursday night.
The leaders wasted no time taking an early lead with Jordan Henderson redirecting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner past Wolves keeper Rui Patricio to make it 1-0 eighth minute.
Sadio Mane was taken off with an apparent injury and replaced just after the half-hour mark by new arrival Takumi Minamino, who was making his Premier League debut after signing from FC Salzburg in December.
Wolves, who have given Jurgen Klopp’s side fits in recent meetings, grew into the match as the first half wore on, but the home side was unable to find an equaliser and Liverpool took a one goal lead into half-time.
The hosts would get back on level terms soon after the restart from a quick-hitting counter-attack that finished with Raul Jimenez smashing a header past Alisson to the delight of the Molineux crowd.
Wolves were firmly on the front foot after the goal and would have been behind were it not for a pair of stellar Alisson saves on shots from Adama Traore and Jimenez shortly after the equaliser.
Liverpool once again found their winner late in a match, this time when Firmino was played into the area by Jordan Henderson after some fancy footwork from Mohamed Salah and the Brazilian smashed his shot past Patricio to keep their winning streak alive.
The result keeps Liverpool 16 points ahead of Manchester City in the table and with a game in hand, while Wolves remain in seventh place on 34 points.
