The fifth edition of youth soccer championship organized by the Association of Grass Root Soccer Developers of Nigeria has been slated for Enugu between December and 16, 2012, with a total of eight teams from various parts of the country participating.
Prize money for the youth soccer fiesta includes first overall winner, 100,000; second position, 75,000; while the third position team would smile home with N50,000.
Addressing sports writers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Enugu, the association’s coordinator in charge of Enugu State and ex international, Kingsley Obiekwu, popularly known as Shagari, and the Enugu State Football Association Chairman, Hon. Chidi Ofo Okenwa, explained that the competition was instituted by the body with a view to providing young people the platform to showcase their God-given talents in soccer.
The tournament, according to Obiekwu, had in the past assisted coaches, local and foreign soccer scouts to fish out good and talented players who are currently playing professional football in parts of the globe, including the nation’s national team.
He said: “The competition affords the boys the opportunity of being discovered by scouts within and outside Nigeria.”
He said that FIFA licensed agent, Friday Kujah Nwankwo, popularly known as Soccer Ambassador, will be at the tournament in Enugu.
The competition, being funded by a German-based firm, C WOERMANN, said the state coordinator, would be played at the University of Nigeria Enugu campus stadium as well as the government field in Nsukka.
Ofor applauded the grass root soccer developers for their vision in promoting from the basis.
He said catching them young remains the answer to the every sports, including football, be it in developed or developing nations.
He, however, assured the organizers of his office’s readiness to play its part with a view to ensuring that the exercise is very successful.
The press briefing was graced by some ex internationals such as Ben Ugwu; John Edeh, currently a coach with Rangers FC of Enugu; and the Secretary of Enugu FA, Francis Ugwu.
