The National Working Committee of Accord Party on Tuesday affirmed Kennedy Iyere as the official candidate for the upcoming 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election.
The confirmation came on the heels of misleading statements from Bright Enabulele, who allegedly claimed to hold the position.
It was learnt that Enabulele, the deputy governorship candidate, had presented himself as the governorship candidate, which caused a stir within the Accord Party.
Reacting quickly to the development, the party leadership intervened that Iyere was the legitimate candidate, having won the primary election on February 17, 2024.
The party also confirmed that Iyere’s candidacy has been properly registered on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal, with Enabulele listed as his running mate.
In his reaction, Maxwell Mgbudem, the National Chairman of the Accord Party, said: “The dissemination of incorrect information, especially regarding something as significant as the governorship candidate, is unacceptable.
“We must maintain the integrity of our democratic processes. In these critical times, it is paramount that we present a united front to the voters. We must ensure that the information we share is accurate and truthful.”
In an official statement, Hon. Joseph Omorogbe, the National Publicity Secretary of the Accord Party, further denounced Enabulele’s claims, saying: “We are committed to upholding the democratic values of our party and the nation. We urge all concerned to disregard the erroneous claim.”
